Police have opened an inquest docket after a four-year-old girl choked to death on Thursday.

THE police in Witpoort near Lephalale, Limpopo urge parents to keep an eye on their kids.

This after a girl (4) choked on a marula fruit in Kauletsi Village on Thursday, 18 January at about 7.15am.

According to Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the deceased, identified as Phologo Machaba, was in with her friends when she swallowed a marula fruit.

"Unfortunately, the fruit got stuck in her throat and caused her to choke. Although she was rushed to Witpoort Hospital for medical attention, doctors pronounced her dead on arrival," he said.

Ledwaba said the police have launched an investigation into this tragic incident.

Acting Limpopo police commissioner, Major- General Scheepers, emphasised the importance of parents and guardians being vigilant and knowing their kids' whereabouts all the time.

Scheepers said it's important that young children are not left unattended when eating this type of fruit as it can pose a choking hazard.

Police investigations are still ongoing.
