GAUTENG police commissioner Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela and senior management of law enforcement agencies led Operation Okae Molao in Ennerdale, south of Joburg, on Friday and Saturday, 23 and 24 September.

The operation was aimed at stamping the authority of the state and assisting the local police station with the reduction of crime.

Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela and Provincial Management led from the front at a roadblock where mA total of 60 suspects were arrested at the roadblock for crimes including possession of unlicensed firearms, driving under the influence of alcohol, as well as contravention of the Immigration Act.

In a continued effort to curb crime and disrupt illegal mining, police in Sophiatown arrested three illegal miners on Friday, 23 September, and seized an AK-47 rifle with ammunition.

“On 23 September, police in Sophiatown and Langlaagte acted on information received about illegal mining activities in Bosmont, and that those suspects were heavily armed. This is the area where six bodies of suspected illegal miners were found about two weeks ago,” said Colonel Dimakatso Sello.

Sello said an operation, led by Brigadier Bonginkosi Ndebele, led to the arrest of three men and recovery of one rifle.

“The police will continue to strengthen efforts to fight crime through various crime prevention operations, including the weekly multi-disciplinary Operation Okae Molao.

“The public is also urged to join in the fight against crime by reporting any criminal activities on the CrimeStop line 08600 10111, or alternatively leaving anonymous tip-offs on MySAPS App,” she said.
