ALMOST halfway through the final exams for the matric class of 2022, and two pupils from different schools have tragically died.
One of them, from Mandlenkosi High School in Lindelani in the north of Durban, was stabbed to death, allegedly by a grade 10 pupil, at the premises on Tuesday, 8 November.
Another one from Umqhele Secondary School in Nongoma allegedly hanged herself after writing the Zulu Paper 1.
Following these incidents, KZN MEC for education Mbali Frazer extended condolences to the families and schools.
“The first candidate was rushed to a nearby clinic for medical attention but succumbed to his injury,” she said.
Frazer said in a separate incident, a pupil went home and took their own life after writing an exam.
“As a department, we are very concerned and will not condone school violence,” she said, urging residents to inform the department’s psychology services whenever they suspected unusual behaviour patterns in pupil to avert such tragedies.
Police spokeswoman Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala confirmed that a case of murder was being investigated by Ntuzuma police.

She said it was alleged that at 1pm, a 21-year-old was stabbed to death by another pupil at school, and police were still searching for the suspect.
Gwala also confirmed that an inquest docket was opened after a pupil hanged herself.
