A PENS-DOWN party ended in tears when 21 people died at Enyobeni Tavern in Scenery Park, Eastern Cape, on Sunday, 26 June.

Police confirmed that 21 were killed while four others are still in hospital fighting for their lives.

Brigadier Thembinkosi Kinana said: “The initial report indicates that a stampede was triggered inside a tavern and it is not yet clear what caused the stampede. Police are still investigating and more details will emerge when the police finish their investigation.”

Police could not confirm the speculation that the incident was triggered by a gas leak inside the tavern that resulted in a stampede.

Scores of parents were waiting outside the scene as they looked for their children who did not come home the night before.

There were pens-down parties across the province on Saturday.

A large number of police vehicles and ambulances are on the scene.

This is a developing story.
