10 reasons why you should eat eggs

HERE are 10 reasons why you should eat eggs:

  1. Eggs are full of protein. Eggs have a high satiety index, which means they make you feel full for longer. One egg has about the same protein as 30g of cooked meat, fish or poultry.
  2. Eggs contain iron. Many people who lack iron in their bodies are anaemic. The iron in egg yolk is heme iron, the most usable and absorbable form.
  3. Eggs have needed nutrients. Eggs are a good source of folate and vitamins A, E and B12.
  4. Eggs do not increase cholesterol. Eggs were demonised for their cholesterol content but many scientific studies have found no link between eating eggs and high blood cholesterol.
  5. Eggs can help with weight loss. Not only do eggs keep you feeling “fuller” for longer, they provide fewer kilojoules and more protein when compared to other healthy breakfasts.
  6. Eggs promote brain health. Choline is a vital part of brain formation in the womb and memory function, even into old age. One egg every day provides 28% of a pregnant woman’s required choline.
  7. Eggs help prevent cataracts. A good dietary intake of eggs, spinach and broccoli is associated with a 20% decrease in cataracts and a 40% decrease in age-related lens and retinal degeneration – the leading cause of blindness in the elderly.
  8. Eggs provide amino acids. Nine essential amino acids (amino acids not produced in the body) are provided by eggs.
  9. Eggs can help protect bones. Eggs are a source of rare vitamin D. Vitamin D is essential for calcium absorption and for maintaining optimum bone health.
  10. Eggs make hair and nails strong. Many people report their hair growing faster after adding eggs to their diet.
