IMPHEPHO is a traditional plant widely used for many purposes.
But the most popular use of imphepho is to communicate with the ancestors and get rid of evil spirits.
Imphepho comes in bundles of dried flowers and can be found in most local shops including traditional herbs shops and street vendors. There are different kinds of it on the market as it is in demand and has many uses.
A SunReader who believes in the power of imphepho wanted to know how to differentiate a good imphepho from the rest.
She wrote to Digital Bones’ sangoma Nzama Maluleke asking for help. Nzama said it was important to get the right kind because ancestors do not tolerate any other kind.
Nzama said: “A good imphepho has yellow flowers.
“A grey imphepho can’t be used for rituals even to communicate with ancestors because the plant hasn’t fully developed.
“When you use the grey imphepho, ancestors are unable to inhale its smoke and they turn away,” said Nzama
