Singer-songwriter Zamajobe Sithole regrets taking a break from the music industry.

The Ndawo Yami hitmaker took a break for 10 years and she said she feels she shouldn’t have done that.

Speaking to Daily Sun, Zama (37) from Vosloorus in Ekurhuleni said she wanted to focus on herself.

“I wanted to take a bit of a hiatus and focus on my inner self and that’s what I was doing. I don’t think I should’ve done that. I don’t think the entertainment industry is a place where you can take a break and want to come back,” she said.

“You should just go on. Whatever you are going through, rather put it into your art form and use it. Express yourself through it and inspire other people,” said Zama.

The songstress who has won a number of awards including Best Newcomer and Best Jazz Vocal Album at the South African Music Awards said she thought dealing with her issues outside of the limelight would work for her.

“For me, it was just the battles and struggles that I was going through.

“I thought it would be best to deal with it out of the spotlight and now I see I shouldn’t have done that. It was a breakup that I went through that caused me to take a break and I shouldn’t have let it,” she said.

“Now, it feels like I’m starting from scratch. It seems harder than it was before.

“I think if I kept the wheel going, it wouldn’t be this hard. I know I’m not fully brand new. People are still in love with the work that I’ve done, so we’re using that to our advantage,” she said.

Zama dropped a new single titled Baba Wethu last week.

“It’s basically just me saying a prayer, hence the title. I’m trying to encourage people to have a good time, but stay praised up. For me, I felt like after what humanity has been going through in the past two years, it just fits. We need to have a good time and dance. I was just mixing two genres, a gospel and a dance meet,” said the songstress.

She said she’ll drop two projects next year.

“I’m going to drop an EP in January. There’ll be two more amapiano tracks and bonus tracks. I’ll also drop the music that people know me for, an album. I’ve started with the writing process. So, I’ll be double releasing next year,” she said.
