HOUSE of Zwide star Thato Dithebe is now an engineering graduate.

The former child star graduated with a BSc in Civil Engineering from Wits University.

Thato (22), who starred in productions such as Kokota, Champions and Unmarried spoke to Daily Sun about chosing the course.

“The choice to do engineering was heavily influenced by my family. Since I was already involved in the Film and TV space, they believed it’d be a smarter choice to study something completely unrelated that also sets me up well, if I want to leave the industry, which I don’t see happening any time soon,” he said.

Thato started being on TV as a youngster. So, juggling TV and school wasn’t much of a hassle for him. He started as a kids show presenter in YoTV.

“To be honest, because I’ve been doing this since I was in grade 2, leaving school early to go shoot YoTV, then coming home late to a lot of homework, it didn’t feel like much work. I had gotten used to it. Plus, I have always been surrounded by a great group of supportive people, from friends, family and my producers. They really all helped me carry the load."

“I think I had a pretty normal schooling life, nothing really out of the ordinary. There were ups and there were definitely downs,” he said.

Asked if he would pursue a career in engineering, Thato said he wasn’t sure yet.

“I’m really enjoying being on screen right now, growing and working on my craft as a performer. However, I definitely want to put the degree to work. How? I don’t know yet.  I'm happy with where I am right now, but things might change. You never know,” he said.

As happy as he is to be a graduate, Thato said he’s glad he’s done with school.

“Yoh, finally. I haven’t slept with so much peace in a while. No reports to be submitted, no modules to catch up on. Niks, zero-academic stress.

“But I'd like to further my studies, definitely. I’m manifesting a scholarship,” Thato joked.
