AS the world commemorates World Diabetes Day on Tuesday, 14 November, Daily Sun was reminded of the constant struggles of those who have either been diagnosed or lost loved ones to the deadly virus.

The number of diabetics in Mzansi has doubled in the past 10 years. According to the International Diabetes Federation, more than 4,2 million people suffer from the disease.

One story that touched the hearts of many people was that of legendary actress Sophie Ndaba. When she lost weight, Mzansi had so much to say, but she put all the noise aside and worked on herself.

She had to heal herself physically and mentally, which was a huge challenge because it required healing, forgiveness and filling her own cup - that was overflowing with sorrow, as she told the Daily Sun in August 2023.

"Together we can save lives. Sadly, I lost a dear friend last week who left behind teenage kids at the age of 43. She was a single mum, always under pressure and stress and had no time to look after their health! Today, sadly, these precious children no longer have a mum. Her funeral arrangements are underway. Diabetes is a real problem in southern Africa!

"I live with it and wake up with the desire to do everything in my power not to become diabetic! Love yourself enough to always "keep the 5 in check," she said.

On this day, she remains passionate about the issue as she points out on her Instagram page that diabetes remains the leading cause of death among women in Mzansi and the second leading cause of death among men.
