CONFUSION was the order of the day as SABC1 aired Indoni Miss and Mr Cultural SA 2019 instead of this year’s contest.

The problem started when Dr Nomcebo Mthembu’s office issued a statement inviting the public to watch a pre-recorded 2020 show.

Mthembu is the founder of the cultural beauty contest.

On Saturday, 7 November, people were again reminded on the Indoni’s Facebook page that there were only a few hours left before they witness Miss and Mr Indoni Cultural SA 2020 @SABC1 at 20:00.

But in the evening, it was clear the show that was aired on SABC1 was not a recent show.

What puzzled many people was that this year’s winners were the same as those from last year, and Dr Mthembu wore the same dress and delivered the same speech she delivered last year.

Some people complained that the same tribes keep winning over and over again.

Msoja Solly commented on Indoni’s Facebook page and said: “I’m not happy with the results. Most titles were won by the Nguni tribes and the same thing happened in the previous season. There’s too much tribalism there shem….aii no this was just discouraging.”

Roliontha Phago wrote: I am not happy with the results but let me tool.”

Daily Sun contacted Dr Mthembu, but her phone rang unanswered. She also failed to respond to messages sent to her.

SABC spokeswoman Mmoni Seapolelo said the show was not aired by mistake.

“The SABC would like to confirm that Mr and Miss Indoni 2019 was not aired by mistake. The project has two elements. The first being the event where Mr and Ms Indoni were chosen – a pre-recorded highlight package of the event which was broadcast in 2019. The second element entails the contestants/winners being followed and profiled for a period in real time. Then a year later, the pre-recorded follow-up show provides the viewer with a cultural journey of education, grooming and leadership as a build-up to the next pageant,” said Seapolelo.
