OVER 140 years have passed since the deadly battle between the Zulu nation and the British at Isandlwana.

But jazz artist and Umkhokha actor Mbuso Khoza is on a mission to revive memories and educate the youth about the historic battle against colonialism.

Khoza is organising a walk from Eshowe in northern KZN, where he is from, to the Isandlwana Mountain to commemorate the battle, which took place on 22 January 1879.

He said the historic event was close to his heart as his ancestors were among the brave Zulu warriors.

“My family member Tshingwayo kaMohale Khoza was among the warriors who fought the whites. A lot of blood was shed,” he said.

“As a person who loves our history, it’s my responsibility to remember this battle and teach the current generation about it.

“Learning history is important because it gives us guidelines and rich knowledge about our roots,” he said.

Khoza said the event was supported by the Zululand District Municipality.

“It will start in Eshowe where King Cetshwayo died. It will then proceed to Nkandla where his grave is and on to Ulundi where warriors will commemorate the battle,” he said.

“Artists, traditionalists and youth from different areas will participate.”
