SABC said Ukhozi FM business manager Sbongi Ngcobo (pictured) is not suspended.

UKHOZI FM's angry listeners were celebrating on social media after reports that the radio station's business manager Sbongi Ngcobo was suspended and investigated.

Since Wednesday, 31 January, Ukhozi FM listeners have been celebrating, saying Sbongi has been suspended and investigated for the controversial Ukhozi FM song of the year song/Ingoma Ehlukanisa Unyaka top ten.

The saga began when Khuzani's song won the Song of the Year in the top ten, while many listeners preferred Mthandeni and Dlala Thukzin's hit songs.

The celebration by listeners on Facebook triggered the SABC to issue a statement clarifying that Sbongi wasn't suspended.

Some of the listeners threatened to boycott Ukhozi FM as many people tuned in to Ukhozi FM during the 2023/2024 crossover.

Daily Sun understands that the Ingoma Ehlukanisa Unyaka top ten has given the SABC a headache, which resulted in the SABC bosses, acting group executive for SABC Radio Siphelele Sixaso and acting group chief executive officer Nada Wotshela going to the Ukhozi FM offices in Durban to have a meeting with only presenters and music compilers.

According to sources, Sbongi and Ukhozi FM programmes manager Pearl Maseko and marketing manager Lwazi Mthabela were asked not to be part of the meeting to allow presenters and music compilers to speak freely.

Acting group executive, corporate affairs and marketing Mmoni Seapolelo said the SABC would like to address the false reports implying that Sbongi is under investigation and suspended.

"Ms Ngcobo is neither being investigated, nor has she been suspended by the SABC as alleged in the public space.

"The SABC is aware of the variety of unsubstantiated allegations levelled against Ngcobo and the irresponsible public statement, which are spearheaded by disgruntled individuals," she said.

Seapolelo said while the SABC understands that the corporation's services and operation are in the public interest and the institution accounts to South African citizens, it has become increasingly imperative to appeal to anyone to ensure that information reported on is without any intentional or negligent departure from the facts whether by distortion exaggeration or misrepresentation.
