SHE shot to fame in 2007 when she played Mabuyi Vilakazi on the SABC1 sitcom, Family Bonds, and she has never looked back.
Actress and radio host Phumzile Mlangeni is now a regular face on TV.
She said the love of culture and tradition got her where she is today.
The 44-year-old from Katlehong, Ekurhuleni told SunBuzz the love of tradition and self-acceptance started when she was growing up.
“We had a tavern at home. So we used to host people who loved culture and traditional music. They used to sing and dance. The love of traditional music grew rapidly in me. I then joined Ubuhle Bentsha Cultural Group, where we used to sing and dance,” said Phumzile.

As a presenter of a traditional music show called Ezakwabantu on community radio Kasie FM, she said she uses what she learnt about culture and tradition at home to make it appealing to listeners.
The show has earned her a nomination at the South African Traditional Music Awards under the Best Traditional Music Show in Community Radio category.
“I’m the only woman nominated in the category, and that makes me proud.”
Phumzile has worked for productions such as Durban Gen, Scandal!, The Queen, and Isithembiso.
She believes that acting is her first calling.
“I’m gifted and able to give people quality entertainment, both as a radio host and actress.”
