SHE’S only two years old, but she is already a TikTok sensation.

This is because Lethukuthula “Lethu” Bhengu from Soweto can read fluently.

Lethu loves to learn and make people laugh. She also loves playing soccer, riding a bicycle, painting and singing.

She is very good at imitating and has a great memory.

She started learning how to read in January. Her mum Ntombikayise Bhengu said it began when Lethu was playing a game on her cousin’s phone, matching a word to an animal.

Lethu got it wrong a few times, but after a few corrections she got it right. “When I saw she was able to read them, I started teaching her letter sounds,” said Ntombikayise.

Lethu’s dad, Phakiso Masooa, said it took a lot of patience and gentle repetition of the alphabet for her to learn.

“We are fully involved in supporting Lethu to be the best she can be. We started teaching her because we want her not to depend on our pockets to get quality education. Our lack of money should never limit her,” he said.

Lethu doesn’t attend pre-school and is home-taught. She also reads once a day.

“We teach her about numbers and multiplication when taking a walk so she doesn’t get bored,” said Ntombikayise.

“We want her to read, write, and learn to swim while still a toddler so we can get her into a good school.

“We want her to start school next year,” she said.
