AWARD-WINNING American singer Anthony Hamilton is in Mzansi to celebrate his 20th album anniversary with the core of his supporters for an Up Close & Personal night.

The singer and songwriter has 18 Grammys under his name and sold more than 50 million records worldwide.

He said he feels at home in Mzansi, where he has been welcomed with open arms since his first visit in 2003.

Hamilton, given the South African name Mzwandile by his fans, spoke to Daily Sun in an exclusive interview at Sandton, Joburg, before his performance at the Sun Arena on Saturday, 23 September and next Sunday.

He shared his journey of music, love, faith and how he has overcome challenges in the music industry with his authentic and soulful voice.

"You can never get used to a lot of love. It's needed and appreciated. It means a lot to be loved by South Africans. It's my seventh time here, and I feel like it's home. Outside of the United States, South Africa is my next favourite. I want to bring my children here so that they can experience it," he said.

Hamilton said the biggest lesson he has learnt in his career is to believe in himself and his gift.

"The first time I got nominated for a Grammy, I could not believe it. It really surprised me because it's not about the music only, but politics too, but the fan base was too strong that they had to nominate me. I shared my life through my music. When you can relate to something, it has a bigger impact. It's easier to sing about who I am and what I have lived," he said.

Hamilton also opened about his personal life and how he used his music to heal and express his emotions.

He said one of his most special songs is Her Heart, which he wrote as an apology to his ex-wife after their divorce.

"Life has a way of humbling you down. That song is my apology to my ex-wife. That song is special," he said.

Hamilton said he loves the food and shopping in Mzansi, and has made some lasting friendships here.

He said he looked forward to performing for his loyal fans, who have supported him throughout his career.

"I'm excited to share this night with them. It's going to be intimate and personal. I'm going to sing some of my classics and some new songs. It's going to be a night to remember," he said.
