Simphiwe Dana is ready to take her fans on a spiritual journey.
After a successful show last year, the award-winning songwriter is back with another offering called Moya.
The Ndiredi hitmaker said Moya, which means spirit, will form part of her three-day show to be held at Joburg Theatre from 3 to 5 March.
She said the show, directed by Gregory Maqoma, will be dedicated to showcasing how the spirit moves and how deeply her sound speaks, her skill and staying power, as well as an understanding of the healing power of music.
Dana said the Moya project came out of a great need to find acceptance, comfort and solace after suffering the loss of her mother.
“Grief is a painfully lonely process that really can’t be shared with others. It requires that you dig deeper into yourself and the guides that have shaped who you are to find that which is beyond the physical.

“Moya is also a fulfilment of my mother’s wish that I acknowledge the spiritual in my life, which to her was in the form of religion. Moya thus becomes a healing circle where we are allowed to feel and process our emotions in a safe space where we don’t feel alone,” she said.
She said it took her six months to complete the project and her fans can expect a weekend of spiritual healing.
“People can expect a collaboration with choreographer and creative director Maqoma, and music director Titi Luzipo.

“Moya is an explosion of South Africa’s performance culture that digs deep or explores our human psyche from a spiritual perspective. The show is akin to a healing prayer circle with 10 backing vocalists and dancers from the Vuyani Dance Company.”
She said that she has prepared about 20 songs, which will include some of her new songs, which will form part of the Moya album that she will release soon.
“Moya is a stand-alone theatre production whose first installation has been packaged into an album and will be coming out soon. After this show, I will be heading to KZN, to share this body of art with them.”
