SHOWMAX has distanced itself from Nonkanyiso “LaConco” Conco’s cultural event, isithebe sezintombi.

LaConco recently hosted virgins where she led them in song and brewed traditional beer, which was featured on TheReal Housewives of Durban.

This angered cultural experts who accused her of exploiting traditional culture.

They also accused Showmax for allowing LaConco to misrepresent African culture.

Cultural expert Dr Gugu Mazibuko said: “Showmax is to blame. They should have researched or consulted for that particular episode, unless their intention was to misrepresent our culture and mislead the nation.”

Dr Nomagugu Ngobese said the episode was disrespectful.

“I am disgusted because they are using our culture for financial gain.

“They should have warned the public that isithebe sezintombi is not a true reflection of our culture.”

But show director Thumeka Hlotshana said that LaConco came up with the idea.

The Real Housewives of Durban is an unscripted reality show and what viewers see on screen is the real lives of the women. What they choose to do in each episode is entirely at their discretion,” said Thumeka.
