NTSIKI Mazwai has received her first award as a musician!
The poet and singer shared how incredible it felt to get first ever award since she started making music.
The 42-year-old performer from Soweto told Daily Sun that she was over the moon when she received the Sawubona Music Jam Award on Tuesday, 4 September.
The event took place in Chiawelo Soweto, Joburg. Sawubona Music Jam is a live music movement in Soweto.
The movement was established eight years ago. This is where they have live music performances in Soweto every Tuesday. The singer said these awards are held annually to recognise the musical community.
“I was asked to perform and found it strange that they were not being forthcoming about my performance time. I went anyway and was surprised when I heard my name being called in stage,” she said.
Ntsiki said It was an exciting moment for her.

“I don’t know what they said the award was for something about being an influential artist. This meant a lot to me and the role I have been playing in the entertainment industry,” she said.
The poet said it’s exciting to be acknowledged for her work and she’s very thankful for this.
“It gives me the confidence to keep making music. It shows that people do see the difference we make as entertainers and this touched my heart,” Ntsiki said.
When asked if she has released any new music, the singer said she recently released the song Bevuya.
“This song is a tribute to Mama Charlotte Maxeke, for the role she played in South Africa and being the face of change during apartheid regime,” she said.
The singer said her fans can also get the latest scoops about Mzansi stars on her YouTube podcast show called Unpopular Opinion.
Lucky Thobela, founder of the Sawubona Music Jam Awards, said the awards are about recognition of self to self.
“It’s about not waiting for the world to appreciate your creativity. We have been appreciating one another in townships,” he said.
Lucky said now it’s the time they take it to a different competitive level in the best league of global arena.

“Artists appreciate the gesture of being awarded as the commercial award ceremonies are clouded with scandal and rumour. Now with SMJ (Sawubona Music Jam Awards), it’s an artist-to-artist recognition and appreciation relation,” he said.
Lucky said so far, the feedback has been overwhelming.
