Youth music drama Sarafina! will be in theatre from 15 July to 3 September.

The show about the Soweto high school uprising against apartheid will be staged at the Durban Playhouse Company.

Spokeswoman Mapule Ngobese said the show has more than 30 new characters from KZN.

“We wanted to open the industry and provide jobs for youth. We have new actors and those who have been seen on TV before,” said Mapule, who used to act in Imbewu: The Seed.

She said even though the show was under Niso House and Partners, the original writer, Mbongeni Ngema, was now involved in directing.

Mapule said actors who starred in the film would be part of the audience.

“We will officially launch it on 15 July (Friday). And we expect old characters such as Leleti Khumalo, who played Sarafina and others like Somizi Mhlongo to grace us with their presence. Sarafina! is a great educational film and we will never let it be forgotten,” she said.

The film starred legends such as John Kani, American actress Whoopi Goldberg and the late Miriam Makeba as the main characters.

For some, it’s an emotional experience, while for others, it brings back memories of how people were oppressed during the apartheid era.

Mapule said tickets are available at Webtickets for R180 and R50 for pupils.
