AWARD-WINNING Vuma FM presenter Jacinta Ngobese has mixed feelings about an international programme.

Jacinta has been selected to participate in the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) in the United States.

The radio presenter, who hosts the mid-morning show called Cruise on weekdays from 9am to noon, will be part of the media personalities and leaders from across the globe taking part in the three-week programme.

The programme is themed, Media responsibility in an age of disinformation, and will start on Tuesday, 5 September.

The 37-year-old presenter from KwaMashu, north of Durban, said her selection comes with mixed emotion as she is excited about it but at the same time it scares her.

“I didn’t do it, but I got a letter inviting me to participate in it and I was excited, and I agreed. I will be the one who will be representing South Africa and I know myself that I will deliver the best.

“I hope to learn more things about the media and come back to teach others in my country,” she said.

Jacinta, who scooped Best Radio Producer at MTN Radio Awards in 2014, said she's happy that she will learn more about how to handle fake news.

“These days there is a lot of fake news on social media and in other media. In this programme we will zoom out the responsibility of media in an age of disinformation in a global level.

“Media should play a big role in giving people the correct information during this time of disinformation,” said Jacinta.

She said their programme will be more practical and they will also visit United States radio stations, television stations and newspapers to see how they handle disinformation.

Jacinta recently made history when she organised a wedding for Vuma FM listeners Nkosikhona Hadebe and Zandile Cele, who have been together for many years but didn't have money to celebrate their wedding.

She asked for donations on air and the big wedding was dubbed KZN umshado womhlaba in June 2023.
