IMBOKODO are waging war against gender-based violence (GBV).

The women warriors against GBV, led by Mapule "Indlovukazi" Ngobese, the Umkhokha: The Curse actress, take their fight to the stage.

These woman, who call themselves Amakhosikazi, Abaholi Bezwe and belong to Indlovukazi's organisation called Esigodlweni Sendlovukazi, will perform their first play titled Omama Abahlobisi Bomhlaba.

Their play will be performed at The Playhouse in Durban, KZN from 10 to 13 August. The aim of the play is to raise awareness about GBV and social ills, and to highlight the challenges mothers face in their homes.

The play's creator, Indlovukazi, told Daily Sun that she has been fighting GBV for a long time, since she founded her organisation called Esigodlweni Sendlovukazi in 2017.

"We just realised that people might understand our fight against GBV better if we bring it to the stage.

"It might happen that others commit GBV because they do not know that what they are doing is unacceptable. If they see it on stage, they might have a better understanding," she said.

Indlovukazi, who plays the role of Mamncane on Umkhokha: The Curse, will also address the challenges mothers face at home.

"We want to show the children why many mothers do not spend more time with them.

"We also want to raise awareness about the irresponsible behaviour of young people, because many of them prefer to gallivant and drink booze rather than help their mothers at home," Indlovukazi said.

She said that their play is directed by legendary playwright and director Mbongeni Ngema, because they want to convey the message the way they want.

"Ngema believes in women and he always respects them, and the way he directs our play will convey the message the way we want it.

"The play will be performed by our members under Esigodlweni, because we have many people including actors, musicians, farmers, politicians and many more who help each other to fight GBV," she said.
