Nozipho Zulu won the Ukhozi FM Winnie Mahlangu Talent Search.
Nozipho Zulu won the Ukhozi FM Winnie Mahlangu Talent Search.

RADIO presenter, Nozipho Zulu's dream to work for Mzansi’s number radio station finally came true just when she was about to give up.

This after Nozipho, who is popularly known as "MaZul’ Ozulayo" from Empangeni, northern KZN, was announced as the winner of the Winnie Mahlangu Talent Search on Friday, 1 September.

The talent search started in 2020 to honour Winnie "Mafungwase" Mahlangu, who was the first black female radio presenter on Radio Bantu in 1962.

Nozipho, who has worked for Imbokodo FM and Icora FM, said it is still hard to believe that she really won the competition as she had already decided to leave radio to pursue business.

“I presented many different shows on Imbokodo FM and spent more years presenting breakfast shows on Icora FM. Last year, I made the decision to quit radio and focus on my business.

“Many people were asking me to enter the talent search competition again. I was always promising them, but not entering it,” she said.

She said on the last day, she recorded herself presenting and entered the competition.

“I was just doing it because I quit radio presenting last year and I told myself that it was over with my radio presenting career and getting an opportunity on the biggest radio station.

“I was surprised that Ukhozi FM listeners voted for me. I am now ready to rock the airwaves again. I want to use the mic to help residents," he said.

Ukhozi FM programmes manager, Pearl Maseko, said it was a tough decision to come up with one winner as the four finalists were all good.

“We ran the competition for the whole of August where we had one winner each week and ended up having four finalists. We then took the four finalists in the station to see their talent and we saw that they are all talented, but we just wanted one winner which is Nozipho Zulu,” she said.

Nozipho joins Zama Mseleku, Bingelela Mpanza and Londa Mbatha, who won previous competitions, as well as Thembeka Zondo and Zimdoller Biyela, who won in 2011.
