LUNGELO “Ngelo V” Vilane is asking for prayers for his son.

The maskandi artist’s nine-month-old baby boy was born with cancer.

“Fortunately, it was diagnosed early but it has still affected him. The shape of his head and his complexion changed. Sometimes, his head would swell so much he was unrecognisable,” said Ngelo V.

“Most of the time, he couldn’t eat because his stomach was filled with blood. Weekly operations had to be performed on him.

“He’s still in hospital and the bill keeps growing. He’s been in hospital for the last eight months.

“Seeing him going through such pain is traumatic and heartbreaking.

“No child or parent should go through such pain.

“He’s so young and at his age, he doesn’t know what is happening.

“Sometimes, I would go to the hospital and not be allowed near him because he was too weak. At one point, doctors told me there was nothing they could do but today my son is slowly recovering. He’s on chemotherapy and I’m happy with his progress.”

Ngelo V said he had already spent R800 000 on treatment.

“Half of the amount was paid by medical aid. I had to pay half a million from my own pocket because the medical aid wouldn’t pay,” he said.

“I’ve decided to open up because I’m much stronger now. My industry colleagues including Jumbo Nyangiwe, Senzo ‘Ntencane’ Zondi and Mlu Bhengu gave me a lot of support, and I’m thankful for that.”

Ngelo V said he opened up because other parents were going through the same thing and felt powerless.

“For this reason, I want to urge people to pray for us.

“As a society, we need more information about cancer in children.

“Most of us suffer in silence because we lack information,” he said.
