NEWZROOM Afrika and Mzansi Wethu are celebrating a year since the launch of their Nguni news bulletins.

This move took many by surprise, especially after they snatched several employees from the SABC.

The 24-hour news channel shocked many when they placed their Zulu and Xhosa daily bulletins concurrently with the SABC1 Nguni news (Zulu and Xhosa) at 7pm on Mzansi Wethu (DStv Channel 163).

They snatched talents like Vusizwe Langa and Xhosa bulletin news reader Lisakhanya Pepe, Zulu bulletin weather man Dicksy Mdlalose, Zulu news bulletin voice-over Ayanda Ntuli and many more while they brought back former SABC1 news reader Thabile Mbhele and Noxolo Grootboom.

On Tuesday, 27 February, the news channel will be celebrating a year of touching lives and making a difference for residents with a festive special bulletin.

They said their bulletins called Izindaba Zethu (Zulu) and Iindaba Zethu (Xhosa) have proven hugely popular with Nguni language speakers, with their mainly focus on putting viewers at the heart of the news and deep connection with communities.

Newzroom Afrika CEO Thabile Ngwato said they are proud of the way communities have formed an authentic attachment to Izindaba Zethu and Iindaba Zethu.

“Many of our stories are suggested by our viewers and it’s so satisfying to see the power of community-based journalism make a real impact for people whose stories are not heard often enough."

“The success of our Nguni news platform shows the strong appetite among South Africans for a reliable and trusted news service that truly reflects our country’s rich diversity,” Thabile said.

M-Net Channels CEO of general Entertainment Nomsa Philiso said when Izindaba Zethu launched on DStv a year ago, no one could have imagined how much it would contribute to changing people's lives as much as it has.

“Adding Izindaba to the Mzansi Wethu line-up has made the channel a go-to for entertainment while keeping viewers informed of what is happening in their surroundings, all of which resonates with our viewers.

“Congratulations to the whole news team. We hope to celebrate more years of being an instrument of change in people's lives,” Nomsa said.
