IT WAS a night of music and celebration on Saturday, 25 June as local stars attended the DStv Mzansi Viewers’ Choice Awards.

The award ceremony returned to the Sun Arena at the Times Square Casino in Tshwane after a two-year break.

Comedian Skhumba Hlophe opened proceedings by winning the first award of the night. He was not at the event. His wife Dibakiso and fellow comedian Mpho Popps accepted the Favourite Comedian Award on his behalf.

The Wife actors Abdul Khoza and Kwenzo Ngcobo walked away with the Favourite Actor and Favourite Rising Star awards, respectively.

Cast members, including Bonko Khoza, Sipho Ndlovu and Thulane Shange, accompanied them onto the stage in celebration.

Gomora actress Sannah Mchunu got a standing ovation when she went up the stage to accept her award for Favourite Actress.

The Queen actress Connie Ferguson won Favourite Personality, which she dedicated to her late husband Shona.

“I’d like to dedicate this award to my best friend, someone who meant the world to me. Someone who believed in me more than I believed in myself,” she said.

The River actor Lawrence Maleka, who also hosted the show, won in two categories – Favourite TV Presenter and Ultimate Viewers’ Choice.

He told Daily Sun: “This is an overwhelming achievement and I always credit this back to the work, the people and my team who consistently work hard to make sure everything is done accordingly.”
