MAUMELA Mahuwa says women in the process of getting divorced should get legal advice.

The actress was inspired to speak out by the current storyline of her Muvhango character, Susan.

She is going through a messy divorce from husband Azwindini (Gabriel Temudzani).

Maumela said: “The first thing women should do, even before marriage, is realise who they are.

“You cannot be someone’s life and forget that you’re an individual.

“Learn that you have the power to think for yourself.

“Please, get a lawyer if you are divorcing. Know your rights. Do everything that needs to be done and don’t kill yourself.”

She said Susan’s problems were caused by insisting on staying in a bad marriage, which a lot of women did.

“Susan is the reason she’s going through this. But she has finally realised that Azwindini did not respect her from the beginning.”

Maumela said as a mum, Susan thought of everyone except herself. “It’s an African thing mums do, and it’s not good. You don’t die for putting yourself first.”

She said the story would unfold in the coming months.
