IN 2020, Mthandazo Gatya was living in a shack but now has become a double platinum-selling musician!
Life has just been getting better for the 32-year-old Afro-soul singer and he has been able to move from his shack in Grasmere, Joburg, to a bigger home.
He told Daily Sun that before he released his hit song Senzeni in 2020, life was tough and was living in poverty.
“I had people who at least helped me so I could eat.
“The shack was the closest thing I had to a home.
“My family is in the Eastern Cape and I was staying here by myself.
“I tried to get jobs but I always felt like I was suffocating and I would quit.
“Music has always been my primary focus. Even when I did get jobs, I would go to the studio when I knocked off,” he said.

Mthandazo said he was about to lose his shack when his breakthrough came.
“In 2019, I hosted a gig in my hood and I lost a lot of money, which left me in debt.
“For me to get out of it, I had to sell what I had and at the time, it was only my home.
“Luckily, I got signed and things changed,” he said.
Mthandazo said he had been trying to start a career in music since 2009.
He said he even made it to the popular show Jam Alley, but nothing worked.
“But I have always known I would be a big musician. When I was growing up, I had a deep understanding of my dreams. I would dream about sharing the stage with legends and I knew it was communication between myself and God.”
Mthandazo said he was working hard so he wouldn’t go back to poverty. “I have a food business called Monument Eatery in Lenasia and I host events.”
