THE Metro FM Awards are coming back with a bang.

It’s been three years since the awards were held, and station business manager Kina Nhlengethwa said she’s excited they are returning.

On Wednesday, 18 January, it was announced at the launch at Capital Hotel in Mbombela, Mpumalanga, that the awards will take place in April.

Kina said entries would open on Thursday and close in February.

The awards would take place in Mbombela, though the venue has not yet been renewed. And, the event will broadcast live on SABC 1 while streaming on SABC Plus and Metro FM’s YouTube channel.

Kina said the planning and preparation started in 2022.

“The people of Mpumalanga will benefit a lot from this big event. We are going to make sure that they are involved from the start,” she said.

She further said her message to listeners at home was that the channel still loves them.

“We have loyal listeners and they are patient with us. They are really giving us the support we need, and we are looking forward to this amazing journey that we are restarting this week,” she added.

Godfrey Ntombela, head of department at Mpumalanga’s Sport, Arts and Culture, said the province has hosted the event before and is looking forward to its return.

SABC operations manager Lungile Nduvane said he’s excited, and it will be one of the greatest shows the province has seen.

“I’m happy as it’s been a while since we’ve hosted the awards in our area,” he said.

Lungile, who is originally from Mbombela, said there will be many opportunities for young artists in the area.

“I am certain they will create great memories. The Covid-19 pandemic has held us back as South Africans, and I’m happy that we’re getting back on track,” he added.
