Maskandi star Mthandeni Manqele believes he knows the secret to his current success.

This as his hit song Paris featuring Lwah Ndlunkulu has reached platinum status, while it has almost 10 million views on YouTube, and more than five million streams on Spotify.

Mthandeni believes staying away from maskandi wars, and working with musicians from other genres, is the one thing that has enabled his song Paris to become more popular.

On Thursday, 7 December the two received a certified Platinum plaque from the Recording Industry of South Africa (RISA).

Mthandeni (35) from eMdletsheni, in KZN told Daily Sun his song reached platinum status a long time ago, but he was just waiting for RISA to complete their processes and officially hand over the plaque to them.

"I know that now our song has already reached double platinum and I will allow RISA to do their process in their way and soon I will be accepting the double platinum plaque from them.

"This is history in the making and I wanted to show Mzansi that I’m not only a maskandi musician, but I can successfully work with other musicians who are not doing maskandi and that will be my style going forward," he said.

Mthandeni said he is reaping the fruits of staying away from unnecessary maskandi fights against his rivals.

"I realised that we are getting older and now we have children, so there is no use fighting each other," he said.

He said musicians should rather entertain people with their music.

"Not involving myself in maskandi fights makes many people love my music. Now many people who are not even maskandi fans love my music," he said.

Mthandeni's Facebook page, which had about a million followers, was removed by Facebook after it was reported of doing "inappropriate things".

"I’m still negotiating with Facebook to give back my Facebook page, but for now I have created a new one to communicate with my fans. If I fail to get my page back, then I will continue with the new one," he said.

Daily Sun tried to contact Lwah Ndlunkulu for comment but her phone was on voicemail. However, she had posted their pictures together posing with the plaque where she congratulated Mthandeni.
