Sonwabile Ndamase is set to receive an honorary award for his contribution in the fashion industry.

THE original creator of the famous Madiba shirt, Sonwabile Ndamase, will host the Fashion, Art and Culture Legacy to the World event on 12 June at Castle in Kyalami.

The event will coincide with his 63 birthday.

The theme for this event is "Icons Gala", and people can only attend strictly by invite.

The honorary birthday celebration and iconic gala has attracted more than 200 guests from all over South Africa and the world, who want to celebrate the legendary Sonwabile and his contributions to the fashion industry.

Sonwabile is known as the man who dressed Mandela. He was cutthroat and he knows what it means to have to overcome adversity.

“I come from the Eastern Cape and I had to fight my way to the international stages of fashion to showcase my unique taste in fabric, a taste that would lead me to dress one the most iconic figures in the world, President Mandela,” he said.

Despite these hardships and challenges, he found himself designing the iconic Madiba Shirt and now he is the executive president of the South African Fashion Design Agency, as well as the head of the Vukani Range Creations fashion house, and founder of the Annual Vukani Fashion Awards.

For decades, Sonwabile has dressed many notable icons and he himself has been bestowed that title. Despite this, he remains humble and always ready to share his knowledge with Mzansi youth who are interested in fashion.

The highlight of the gala event will be an honorary award presented to Sonwabile. This award recognises his efforts and the success he has had in his journey.

“When I received the news from my friends at Castle kyalami that they would like to do this event, I was instantly overfilled with joy and knew that it was going to be special. I am very excited to see what has been prepared, and I know that a lot has been happening behind the scenes to make this spectacular. A lot of previous associates and people I have met in my journey are also looking forward to the evening. From politicians, celebrities and industry leaders. They're all excited,” said Sonwabile.
