MATALANE Mokgatla, a prominent advocate for men's mental health, is shining with pride after clinching victory at the Golden Shield Heritage Awards (GOSHA) 2023.
His remarkable journey propelled him to secure first place position across all nine provinces in Mzansi, competing in the prestigious Young Heritage Activist category.
The crowning ceremony was held at the Artscape Theatre in Cape Town on Thursday, 14 September.
The all-round entertainer from Sekhukhune in Limpopo was showered with accolades, including a generous cash prize of R30 000, a gold trophy, and a certificate of profound acknowledgement.
Speaking to Daily Sun, Matalane expressed his deep gratitude for the recognition, emphasising its significance in his life.
"I am filled with excitement because I believe this achievement will inspire many individuals interested in heritage and culture to consider it as a career path.
"I feel highly motivated and blessed to have made it among a thousand nominees,” he said.
The year 2023 carries special significance as it commemorates the 10th anniversary of the GOSHA awards - an initiative championed by the National Heritage Council of South Africa.
These awards honour and reward heritage activists, practitioners, and dedicated citizens for their unwavering commitment to preserving and celebrating the nation's rich cultural legacy.

Matalane's dedication to preserving Bapedi heritage and indigenous knowledge systems sets him apart as a standout advocate for cultural preservation and enrichment.
He recently penned his first book, Healing Wounded Soldiers, to address challenges faced by men.
The book was launched on August 26 at Library Gardens in Polokwane, drawing an audience of more than 60 men.
It touches on critical topics related to men's mental health issues, and advocates for the protection and well-being of boys.
Matalane's talents span diverse arenas, and his unwavering commitment to preserving and promoting heritage enriches South African culture.
His musical prowess shines through in his recorded traditional music album A Gangwe Ke Matalane, showcasing his skill as a Sepedi praise poet.
