"I made it a mission of mine to get on stage and stand up for each and every one of us. I did it scared, shaking and without the approval of my parents. Just like we do things in our community. We are scared, but we do it regardless. This is the most important award for me, and I did it. Through me standing here, I know we can all do it," she said.

Thandiswa Mazwai won the big award for the night, the Simon Nkoli Award.

When accepting her award, she said she is finally a gay icon.

"When Thami told me I was going to receive this award, I was so moved. I said I'm too young and he should wait until I'm 85, and he can give me something like this.

"I've always wanted to be a gay icon and tonight, I can say that I have that honour. In this room, in this community, I found a home. I found safety. Some of these people radicalised me and taught me how to live in the world, and showed me I'm enough. That's the thing I'm most grateful for, that we can love each other for who we are," Thandiswa said.
