COMEDIAN Abuti Lolo is making a name for himself and aiming high.

Abuti Lolo, whose real name is Lehlogonolo Mokoane, started out in his hometown of Secunda in Mpumalanga and now he’s finally planning to take his one-man show to Joburg and Pretoria.

Abuti Lolo (28) spoke to SunBuzz about his journey to being one of the funniest comedians on stage and on social media.

“What made me fall in love with comedy was having a supernatural ability to make people laugh. The more you do comedy, you realise and understand that people buy tickets for comedy, so they laugh and forget about their problems,” he said.

“Another thing is that their problems make them laugh when we now speak about similar situations they are in as jokes. And that’s a supernatural power I didn’t want to let it go. Hence I got into comedy,” he said.

The comedian said he worked his way up from Secunda to Jozi.

“Where I come from, there weren’t comedy shows. So, we started our own thing. We would go to people who own venues and ask that they borrow us their spaces when they don’t have events. I would also wait for a big name to come to Secunda and I’d reach out to them on social media, asking to open their shows for them,” he said.

“One day, Trevor Gumbi had a performance here and he agreed that I open for him. I used that opportunity to learn from him and asked him to give me pointers on how I can make it in the big city.”

Since then, he’s done gigs with some of the biggest names in SA comedy. He recently had a show called I’ve Got Friends Too alongside Skhumba Hlophe, Sfiso Nene and Tats Nkonzo.

He’s also been part of one of the country’s biggest comedy shows, David Kau’s Blacks Only.

“It’s been an amazing journey in the sense that the growth has been phenomenal. I’ve been invited to amazing shows. I’ve won awards and I have big support at home. I’ve started selling out big venues at home because they are fully behind me,” he said.

Abuti Lolo said he’s looking forward to finally having his one-man shows in the coming months.
