LEGENDARY kwaito singer Eugene Mthethwa is launching a back-to-school campaign called the Ke Star dance competition.

The musician, who is also known as Simply Eugene, said this initiative is going to change many lives in Mzansi.

The 55-year-old member of Trompies from Meadowlands, Soweto told Daily Sun that he realised that many pupils are struggling with many things to get going in life, especially in government schools.

“I have therefore taken a decision to also embark on social responsibility knowing that I have the influence to bring change. I want to utilise this positively to encourage many youth who wish to be like me or even better than me to know the importance of being educated,” he said.

The musician said it is for this reason that he decided to start this campaign, which uses a youthful way to encourage them to go back to school.

“To read more about the competition, please follow the link: www.kestar.co.za. Your participation or support in any way would be highly appreciated,” he said.

The musician said he hopes this will change many lives.

“The campaign will start this year on the 1st of February 2023 in line with the back-to-school campaign that the EFF has embarked on. And as a member of EFF, who operates within the entertainment sector, I am also contributing to the campaign the best way I know how to bring change,” he said.

The musician said he is doing this while pursuing his objective of contributing towards the skills development of young artists.

“You’d know that most of our sector’s people are not educated and thus they have been exploited for many years. So, to curtail this, we need to develop a new breed of artists who are educated,” he said.

“They often say, ‘it takes a village to raise a child’, and as a nation known for ubuntu, we will appreciate any kind of support and help towards raising 10 000 pairs of shoes as our starting point, including school uniforms. Even if they are old and no longer in use, there is a child who may appreciate to have half of it,” he said.

The musician said he hopes other companies donate food parcels to give to children who are living in abject poverty, who they may identify through the competition.

“Mobile companies who may also wish to participate could offer data to help kids to participate. I am sure we may have a way of achieving that,” Simply Eugene said.

“We do not have a limit in terms of numbers, but we hope we can continue with the project throughout the year. We will be visiting schools with celebrities who will be motivating them to do well and guide them with certain things,” he said.

The musician said they will be doing this even during the final exams later this year.

“We will surely announce the number of children who will benefit this year,” he said.

He said they aim for this to become an annual competition.
