RADIO station Kaya 959 is celebrating 24 years of successful broadcasting this year.
Managing director Sibongile Mtyali said they have many reasons to celebrate this year because of the changes the station’s made.
Apart from changing names from Kaya FM to Kaya 959,
Sibongile said they’ve added new presenters like Thomas Msengana, who moved from Metro FM, and Phemello Motene, who moved from SAfm.
She said: “There are so many reasons to celebrate this birthday. In this year we have repositioned the station as part of our strategy to appeal to a bigger audience. We have made extensive changes to the brand’s look and feel.
“We have brought on board new talent and reconfigured existing shows to bring them into alignment with this strategy. We are continuously improving our playlist for a stronger music offering. And we are constantly challenging ourselves to meet the needs of our listeners and clients.”

Commercial programming manager Maekanya Morotoba said the station has seen some of Mzansi’s elite celebs like Bra Hugh Masekela, Bob Mabena, Mam Sibongile Khumalo, Dr Sindi van Zyl and pop act MarcAlex (Mark and Alex Rantseli) presenting.
He said they continue to have and celebrate great personalities like Skhumba, T-Bose, Unathi, Sizwe Dhlomo and Gugulethu Mfuphi.
Maekanya also mentioned two personalities who have been with the station from when it first started.
“Two current presenters have been on Kaya 959 since the station first opened its doors in 1997: Nicky B and Colin Kgari. There have been some remarkable moments.
“Some of those that stand out include the first Breakfast Show broadcast by Lawrence Dube, winning Station of the Year twice in 2013 in 2017, as well as seeing two listeners marry in Newtown as part of the Two Strangers and a Wedding competition,” said Maekanya.
