IMBEWU actor Jack Devnarain is tired of empty promises from the South African government.

He took to Twitter and wrote: “Imagine telling people for 29yrs that you’ll give them land, housing, water, electricity, roads and jobs...and you still have no clue how you’ll deliver it. Imagine listening to those promises for 29yrs, and still thinking it’s about to come true.”

But a handful of people defended the government. Buyongo Phiri responded to Jack and said: “A lot has been achieved where electrification and water delivery are concerned. Even you as an Indian man has greatly benefitted from policies like BBBEE (Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment). The ANC has its failings but it’s also achieved quite a lot. Also, where is the opposition for them to vote for?”

But Jack stood by his statement and said: “Yes, #ANC has had some modest achievements. No, I do not benefit from BBBEE. There are opposition parties. It’s up to individuals to decide whether they want to vote for them or not.

“Truly, you need to research this more deeply. In a practical sense, the real Indian beneficiaries of BBBEE are #ANC linked businessmen who are already well established and unapologetic party donors. This is an indictment of BBBEE as a whole since its inception. Its patronage,” he continued.

He acknowledged that there were achievements but there were more losses.

“There have been some wins. I suspect many of those wins are now being eroded. But by far, the benefits to Indian-owned business apply only with respect to doing business with govt agencies. Indian business never needed govt as a client to succeed,” he said.
