Idols SA top nine throw it back for Heritage Day!

CONTESTANTS continue to fight for the number one spot on Idols SA.

The theme on Sunday night was South African classics to celebrate cultural diversity for Heritage Day.

After receiving over seven million votes, the top nine was chosen and Lerato was eliminated.

First to perform was Noxolo and she gave a rendition of Shebeleza by Joe Mafela, making the crowd go crazy.

Judge Thembi Seete said she’s a natural.

Following Noxolo was Kabelo, who sang Ringo’s Ekuseni and Thembi said she wanted him to lead this song and he did just that.

Mpilwenhle followed with a rendition of Nomalanga by Caiphus Semenya which impressed the judges.

Judge JR said it was a very complex and technical performance.

“You went jazz vocal on that record. Sister, I am a fan of yours,” he said.

Judge Somizi Mhlongo said it made him emotional.

“You are going far,” he said.

It was Ceejay’s turn as he joined the top nine and he performed Hugh Masekela’s iconic song Send Me.

Somizi said: “You gave it your feel and you were fun. You surprised me in a good way. This performance was really entertaining.”

Tesmin-Robyn sang Siyaphambili by Stimela.

Thembi said she loves that she doesn’t give up.

“It felt like you were struggling. I don’t know if it’s the nature of the song. It didn’t work for me,” she said.

Ty Loner followed with a performance of Scatterlings of Africa by Johnny Clegg.

JR said the arrangement was perfect for him.

“Your vocal delivery brought you back to basics,” he said.

Nozi sang Thandiswa Mazwai’s Nizamalwa Ngobani.

Somizi said the instruments were overpowering her voice.

Thapelo followed with a performance of Sankomota’s hit Papa.

Thembi said: “You have a signature voice. Most of us work so many years to have what you have. It’s great to watch you taking those notes,” she said.

The last to perform was Zee who performed Brenda Fassie’s hit song, Mama I’m Sorry.

Somizi said he believes there’s something special about Zee’s voice.

“I think you’re super talented,” he said.
