AFTER 60 years on air, Motsweding FM is ready to move with the times.
Programmes manager Itumeleng Bahetane said the station, which first hit the airwaves on 1 June 1962, will be moving online.
“We are 60 and successful. But now we want to move with the times. We want a different approach to content. We want people to know about us online,” he said.
“We will invest a lot in research so that we understand better and give listeners what they need. Most importantly, we will protect the language and culture of the Tswana people.
“I believe when we remain true to who we are and are authentic, people appreciate us.
“We don’t want to change Tswana, but we want to remain authentic.”
Bahetane said celebrating their 60th birthday was a big deal for the station.
“We acknowledge the role we play in being the custodians of the language and culture of the Tswana people. Anything that goes beyond 60 years becomes heritage,” he said.

“We are saying this is an inheritance for generations to come. We hope they’ll take the baton and continue the work.”
Bahetane said they’ll celebrate the station throughout June with various events and competitions.
“We started the celebrations on 1 June during the morning and afternoon drive shows. We had a cake-cutting moment,” he said.
“The past weekend, we had a Konka 60 activation in Rustenburg in North West. We’ll go to Kuruman and Kimberley in Northern Cape at month end. We have a series of on-air activations, where we have competitions where people can win their share of R60 000.”
