GRAMMY Award-winning Nomcebo Zikode has encouraged young people to never give up on their dreams.

She said they should work to hone their talents so they can become the Nomcebos of the future.

The Jerusalema hitmaker from Hammarsdale, west of Durban, received a hero’s welcome when she landed at the King Shaka International Airport on Thursday, 23 February.

Her fans, family, eThekwini Municipality officials and artists, including Zakes Bantwini, celebrated her homecoming after she, Zakes and Wouter Kellerman won Grammy Awards earlier this month.

Nomcebo said she hopes what happened to her shows other people from KZN that anything is possible.

“It doesn’t matter where you come from, what is important is where you are going. What is important is to love ourselves and love the work we do.

“As we are born, we all have different talents so I want people to respect their talent even if it is not for music but for other careers. Please respect it because you don’t know where it can lead you. Everyone can shine,” she said.

Nomcebo said one's background doesn’t determine their destination because she grew up in a poor home but is now an international star.

“It is possible. Let us continue dreaming big. We won with the song titled Bayethe. I want people to not be ashamed of themselves. I’m popular in many countries for singing in my Zulu language. Let us be proud of ourselves and I was grateful to see Zulu dancers dancing during my welcoming here,” she said.

Nomcebo's older Sister Thoko Nkwanyana told Daily Sun they are proud of her.

“She grew up loving to sing but we didn’t think she can go far with her music career. We thought singing is for those who have soprano voices, not her as she sings with a bass. Now we see it was God's plan,” she said.

DJ Sox said he's proud of Nomcebo for being the first woman from KZN to win a Grammy.

Nomcebo was welcomed by eThekwini Municipality's chief whip Patience Sishange on behalf of Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda.
