CONGRATULATIONS are in order for jazz singer and vocal artist, Gloria Bosman.
She was recently appointed as a new non-executive member at the Southern African Music Rights Organisation (Samro).
In a statement last week, Samro said: “Samro strives for greater female inclusion, not only within the organisation itself but the music industry as a whole.”
Samro chairman Nicholas Maweni said Gloria was voted in by members to help make key decisions and steer important initiatives on behalf of the organisation.
“The executive management of Samro is pleased that it has made exemplary progress appointing women in the organisation’s leadership, with about 65% of all employees at Samro and 71% of senior management being women.”

Earlier this year, Samro revealed the finding of a preliminary study which showed that women remained poorly represented in the music sector.
The research found that women are largely excluded from key decision-making positions within the industry, and face numerous challenges that result in their marginalisation when compared to their male counterparts.
“The study helped us better understand the causes of gender imbalance to change the unfair position women still find themselves in and to play a leading role in improving the situation and advancing women in the industry,” said Maweni.

He said that the study was inspired by the fact that only 18% of Samro’s members were women, according to a survey conducted in March 2021.
“Samro wanted a more detailed, qualitative picture of the experiences and views of women in the industry, as seen through the eyes of a selected group of women music makers, to better understand the gender imbalance in its membership,” added Maweni.
Commenting on her appointment, Gloria said: “It gives me great pleasure to serve on the Samro board. For a long time artists operated from the outside, but we have now been included.
“This means we will have a voice in the decision-making process.
“Therefore, I promise my fellow colleagues that I’ll represent them truthfully and with honesty.”
