ACTRESS and businesswoman Sonia Mbele is set to appear in the Joburg Magistrates Court on Tuesday, 5 October.

According to NPA regional spokeswoman Phindi Mjonondwane, she was set to appear in court for tax evasion this week, but the date was postponed to 5 October.

The actress (46), known for her roles in productions such as Generations, DiepCity and Blood & Water, together with her business partners who are directors of Real Housewives of South Africa (Pty) Ltd, are charged 42 counts of various charges.

“Nomthandazo Sonia Mbele was expected to appear at the Johannesburg Magistrates Court alongside Yolisa Gqunta and Rebone Sesing for contravening the Tax Administration Act. Mbele submitted a medical certificate stating that she is booked off sick until 3 October 2023. The trio are Real Housewives of South Africa (Pty) Ltd directors,” Phindi said.

She also revealed that the trio hadn’t filed company income tax for three years.

“The directors in relation to their company, Real Housewives of South Africa, are facing 42 counts of not filling company income tax from 2019 to 2022, not filing their Value Added Tax (VAT) returns from 2020 to 2022 and also not filing their Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) from 2020 until 2022,” she said.

Phindi said a warrant of arrest had been issued against Sonia, but it’s been held until 5 October.

“The case has been postponed to 5 October 2023 for Mbele to appear in court and the co-accused to be granted legal aid. An application was made for Mbele’s warrant of arrest to be issued and has been held over until 05 October 2023,” she said.

When called, Sonia did not answer her phone or respond to messages.
