THE family of late radio presenter DJ Mulo thought he was recovering when the worst happened.

According to the family spokesman Mantsitsi Mamabolo, Mulo had been getting better, and they unexpectedly found him unconscious on Saturday, 16 December.

The 38-year-old was diagnosed with cancer in 2022, and that was his cause of death.

Mantsitsi spoke to Daily Sun about the DJ's death, whose real name was Nhlamulo Hlungwani.

“I can’t disclose the type of cancer that he had. At first, he thought it was something else, but the pain wasn’t going away. So, they did more tests to figure out what was happening, and they found out he had cancer. This was around October of 2022,” he said.

Mulo was recovering and had started gaining weight when he died.

“It’s the craziest thing because he was getting better. You could see he was starting to gain weight. His results were getting better. And all of a sudden, that was the end. On Saturday, he passed away. We all, including himself, thought that everything was fine."

“Before he started recovering, it got to a part where we decided there should always be someone around him, to make sure he’s okay. And he recently said he was fine; he didn’t need to be taken care of anymore. We could also see that he looked better and stopped being around him all the time. However, when we came back from where we were on Saturday, we found him unconscious,” he said.

Mantsitsi said they will miss him.

“Nhlamulo was an amazing guy. He had so much love for his family and friends. He was an awesome guy. He loved having people around, and he loved hosting. Every other weekend, he would have someone over. He was very intelligent and had a level of wisdom that helped people. He would tell you things that are hard to hear.

“For me personally, I lost my best friend and brother. Nothing is confirmed yet, but I can say that the funeral will be on Saturday, 23 December in Giyani,” he said.

Mulo had a recurring role on e.tv's Rhythm City as DJ Sax.

He also produced a youth show, Craze.

He was currently the commissioning editor at SABC and had graduated with his postgraduate diploma in management from the University of Cape Town in 2021.
