ON the third anniversary of the death of gospel singer Neyi Zimu, his son, Muzi (21), ended up trending because of his tribute.

Gospel group Spirit of Praise invited him over to make a tribute song for his father, and the music video touched the hearts of many South Africans because Muzi sounded just like his dad.

He sang many of Neyi’s songs, including Jesu Unamandla, Jeso Rato La Hao and Yehla Nkosi.

Neyi died after battling with cancer in 2019, and Muzi spoke to Daily Sun about singing his songs on a big stage.

“It was like a dream come true. It was surreal. As a kid growing up, I’ve always wanted to perform on stages of such magnitude. However, I didn’t expect to get there that soon, especially on that stage,” he said.

“Paying tribute to my dad on the same platform he was on was very emotional, and I take pride in it because it is important to remember those who went before us. I am grateful that I was able to pay tribute to him,” he said.

Muzi added that when Spirit of Praise called, the group wanted him to only sing one song but he asked to sing more.

“When I went to my first rehearsal, I had a meeting with Bishop Benjamin Dube. He showed me a list of people I was going to sing with as part of the tribute, and the songs they chose. Initially I was meant to do one song. But I spoke to him and asked that I do all songs because I believed that no one was going to pay tribute and do them like I would,” said Muzi.

He further said his family had been coping well since the death of the singer.

“My family and I have been through almost every stage of grief individually and collectively. And, we are on our feet and have faith in God. Being together has made us who we are, and we are still a great family – minus one member. My sisters are growing and my mother is doing her thing. I’m glad that I can still fulfil my duty of loving, caring and protecting them,” he said, adding that he would be releasing his own music soon.
