THE South African entertainment industry is continuing to help KZN flood victims.

Celebs and organisations have come up to donate and help victims of the floods that have claimed the lives of more than 440 people in the province.

The cast of e.tv’s hospital drama series, Durban Gen, also helped. They gave away groceries to Ngoqokazi Hall in Indana.

The series’ leading actors Bhekisizwe Mahlawe, Fanele Ntuli, Yola Plaatjie, and Duduzile Ngcobo were leading the initiative.

Durban Gen’s social media manager Nana Zuke and publicist Thabile Mokone spoke to Daily Sun about the donations.

“We started this initiative to help these families that have fallen destitute because of the floods. A lot of them have lost their homes and they are living in halls.

“Some don’t have any income and it was really just to lend a helping hand and show that we are family and people do care,” said Thabile.

“We also wanted to give them hope that they are not alone, and there are a lot of people giving them love.” Nana said the people at the hall were ecstatic to see the cast when they walked into the hall.

“The reaction from people was so heart-warming. They were so happy, when we walked in the mood in the hall was quite sombre, and as soon as they saw the cast members, they were so happy. One of the ladies there even said she didn’t think there were people who cared. They were very happy. It was an atmosphere full of gratitude,” she said.

While other celebs and organisations received backlash for posting their photos of videos of themselves helping, Thabile said they weren’t boasting but wanted to inspire more people to help.

“I think the intention for us was not to show off, but we posted in the hopes that it would inspire more people to go out there and do more. We only did a bit and there is so much to be done,” she said.

“This was to inspire people to help where they can, whether they buy rice or water. We hope that people feel inspired to do the same because the damage is a lot,” she added.

“We are hoping we’ll be able to do more in the future and assist more people.”
