THE cancellation of Durban Gen has left cast members jobless and devastated.

Nelisiwe Sibiya (30), who plays Dr Mbali Mthethwa, said she was heartbroken as the e.tv telenovela was her big break.

However, she said she was grateful for the opportunity as she learnt a lot during her three years on the show.

She won the Best Actress award at the African Social Entertainment Awards held in Rosebank, Joburg, on 11 December.

She said although the end of the telenovela was devastating, she chose to focus on the positive things it brought to her life.

She said God and her ancestors were always with her.

“Many questioned whether I would be able to make it as an actress. They only knew me as a singer. However, my ancestors worked overtime,” she said.

“My talent proved itself and I have been receiving awards. Durban Gen may have been cancelled but it brought nothing but positive vibes to my career.”

Nelisiwe, who is known for taking pride in her culture, said she had been accused of having sexual relationships with various celebrities.

“I know my role came with damning accusations. I’ve been accused of many things, including sleeping with my colleagues and other male celebrities. I refused to be broken by these accusations. My ancestors protected my heart. My image was dragged through the mud but the attempts failed. Today, I am an award-winning actress and I believe as young as I am, I am going far,” she said.
