Rapper Siyabonga ‘KLY’ Mkhize said balancing music and studying was not an easy task.

“I AM glad I made it!”

These were the words of excited rapper KLY, whose real name is Siyabonga Mkhize, when he graduated with a BCom Degree in Marketing from Varsity College in Waterfall, Midrand, on Friday, 3 June.

Siyabonga, who is originally from KZN, said he was happy to have a degree and make his family proud.

“It felt great finally finishing my studies. It was a long journey, and balancing music and studying was not an easy task,” he said.

“It was a three-year course, but I left for a while to focus on my music.

“During Covid-19, I had time on my hands and decided to go back and finish my degree.”

Siyabonga said the biggest challenge was managing his time.

“It was very hard because the entertainment industry doesn’t have a knock-off time. Coming back from studio at 4am and having classes at 8am was a struggle but I made it work as best as I could,” he said.

Siyabonga said he hoped more musicians could study so that they could have knowledge of other things.

“We need to show young people that education is important.

“Musicians need to inspire others through music and their studies,” he said.

The rapper recently released a single titled Siyabonga with Aubrey Qwana.

He said the song was dedicated to everyone who made it out of the pandemic and was facing life’s harsh realities.

He said his fans should expect more music from him.

“I am busy as we speak, making music for my fans. It’s going to be a lit winter,” he said.
