AFRICAN Jazz pioneers Caiphus Semenya, Dr Johnny Mekoa, Dorothy Masuka, Miriam Makeba, Abigail Kubeka and Sibongile Khumalo will receive a special honour from their fellow colleague, Hendrick Monyeki.
The Tribute to South African Jazz Legends concert is set to take place at the Joburg Theatre on Friday, 2 September.
“This show will feature jazz legend Stompie Manana and a 10-piece band. The purpose of this concert is to honour South Africa’s jazz music icons, alive and departed. The show intends to pay tribute to these artists who have brightened up the spirits of South Africans even during the darkest days of the country’s oppressive past,” said Hendricks.

He said the death of his father figure, legendary jazz trumpeter Dr Johnny Mekoa in 2017, inspired this idea. In 2018, he started organising the tribute concert and today the concept has grown and is enjoyed by all music lovers, young and old.
“Looking back to my childhood days, I remember how I listened to jazz music with my family and neighbours. I used to marvel at how they would sing along and dance to their tunes. I realised that the music had a significant meaning to the older people around me at the time. They paved a way for me and inspired my journey in the music industry. With this show I want to show my appreciation on behalf South Africans. I want to say thank you to these jazz legends for crying with us and for wiping our tears. I want to say thank you for remaining a part of our lives in democratic South Africa,” he continued.
Tickets for this concert are already available at WebTickets, Pick n Pay or Joburg Theatre.
