ACTOR, playwright, comedian and radio presenter are all Simthande Myeza’s rightful titles.

The 25-year-old is popularly known as Makathangithini on Facebook – one of the few satirical comedians in Mzansi.

“I started doing comedy in 2019 during lockdown. It was out of boredom, so it didn’t get attention. But things changed in 2020 when I made a joke about one of the graduates at UKZN.

“The student came from a disadvantaged background and he was crying.

“His story touched a lot of people so much that he received help. I was also touched, and made a joke out of that and posted it on social media. That was my breakthrough,” he said.

Simthande admitted that initially, people felt that he was being mean and mocking the poor guy.

“But others understood this type of comedy and supported my work. This worked to my advantage because everyone wanted to listen to and watch my work. Today, I have a huge following on social media and I’m glad people have finally warmed up to satire.”

Speaking about his love for comedy, he said: “As a radio presenter, l interact a lot with different people, including comedians. Eventually I fell in love with comedy and I pursued it.”

He shared that most of his jokes were addressing social ills.

And despite this newfound fame, his goal is to become a full-time actor and comedian.

“I also want to write films. I’ve written a short film and it played on Soweto TV, titled Amaphimbo. It’s about a man who quits university to pursue his dream, but things go south when he first has to convince his bull-headed mother,” he said, adding that he would also like to own a production company.

“I’m working at Ikhwezi community radio and I’m hungry for bigger opportunities.”
