Kabelo Mabalane is celebrating twenty years of sobriety.

KWAITO artist Kabelo Mabalane marked 20 years of sobriety on Thursday, 1 September.

Speaking to Daily Sun, Kabelo said he had not been able to process his emotions about this milestone but was grateful to have asked for help.

Over the years, he has been open about his journey of overcoming drug addiction, even sharing it in his autobiography, titled I Ran For My Life.

He spent six weeks in a rehabilitation facility and further embarked on programmes to sustain his sobriety.

Reflecting on his life, Kabelo said his mother reached out to late legendary musician Hugh Masekela for help, but he wasn’t ready to listen.

Lucas Mahlakgane, founder and chairman of World Changers Candidates (WCC), was also among those who reached out to Kabelo.

“Around that point in my life, there were interventions made but I wasn’t ready to listen,” said Kabelo, adding that he later realised that he didn’t sign up for that kind of life and asked for help.

“No one enjoys addiction. I knew the truth that this wasn’t life and I wasn’t productive. I asked for help and followed the suggestions. I trust and pray that my life is a testament that with help, you can turn your life around,” he said.

Kabelo further urged youngsters who were trapped in drug addiction, including nyaope, to never hesitate to ask for help.

“Even when you feel like you’re alone and no one understands, there is help out there but you have to want it. You will be surprised to realise how many people will be willing to assist, if you step out and ask for help.”

Lucas has described Kabelo as champion of the WCC organisation.

“I remember how I confronted Kabelo about his use of drugs – over a cup of coffee, and I was very harsh to him. I told him to leave drugs because he has a bright future ahead of him,” he said.

He said after Kabelo’s return from rehab, they formulated an aftercare programme to keep him busy, and further advised him to find a spiritual home. This also saw him committing to the Comrades Marathon.

To mark the milestone, Kabelo will be spreading a message of hope to others, including pupils of Leondale High School.
