THE lives of two late legendary Mzansi artists will be told through documentaries in KZN this week.

The documentaries, about founder of Grammy Award-winning group Ladysmith Black Mambazo Professor Joseph Shabalala and actor Menzi Ngubane, will be shown at the Ugu Film Festival from Thursday to Saturday, 20 to 22 October.

Joseph’s documentary, titled Music Is My Life, tells the story of how he founded Mambazo to where the scathamiya group put Mzansi on the map by winning a Grammy.

Director Mpume Dube said the purpose of the documentary was to celebrate his life and showcase the exceptional job he did for Mzansi when he was still alive.

“It will be the opening act for the film festival, so it will be shown on Thursday at Margate Sands Hotel in Port Shepstone. It will take us through his journey as an extraordinary and passionate artist. We are glad that his legacy is still here,” said Mpume.

Menzi’s documentary, titled The Life and Times of Menzi Ngubane, is directed by Ntokozo Mahlalela with the help of the actor’s family. It tells his story as one of Mzansi’s talented actors, and will be shown on Saturday.

Ugu Film Festival director Zanele Nhlapo said the event was aimed at acknowledging those who were in the film industry.
